SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Willie Preston’s law to expand requirements for school districts to notify families of students with disabilities of advocates experienced in helping students with Individualized Education Programs goes into effect Jan. 1.
“Here in Illinois we have a responsibility to ensure every student receives an equitable education,” said Preston (D-Chicago). “Keeping families of students with disabilities aware of all their available resources will help not just the students, but also their community.”
House Bill 1366 will ensure that all parental notification for IEP meetings inform parents that they may invite other individuals to assist who have knowledge or special expertise regarding the child. Some examples of the individuals may include stepparents, relatives, doctors, therapists or nurses.
Additionally, the Illinois State Board of Equation will be required to create and distribute materials to all school districts about the IEP facilitation process, which must also be sent to parents and guardians when they are notified of an upcoming IEP meeting.
“This law makes sure that every student in our schools is supported and protected,” said Preston. “The needs of every student are different and I am committed to ensuring that each and every one is met.”
House Bill 1366 goes into effect Jan. 1, 2026.
